My sister-in-law is pregnant, so I am, of course, in a crafting tizzy.
Knitting projects have been contemplated, but it was the ever elusive finished quilt that I decided on.
You may remember my first attempt.
Sloppy at best and still incomplete. The baby this quilt was intended for turned 1 in October.
My powers of procrastination are strong.
This time, I had my own design in mind and was inspired to get started.
Aubrey wants to raise her son knowing that even though he was born in Virginia, he is a New Yorker by blood. So I took two New York icons and made quilts.
I give you the Yankees jersey
and the subway sign.
I tacked down the Yankees symbol with red thread using a stitch that reminds me of the stitching on baseballs.
There are actual subway lines to match up to Aidan's initials, so I used the lines' real colors. They may not be very babyish, but New Yorkers don't have time for kid stuff.
When working on my first and still incomplete quilt, I learned that making squares out of fabric is hard. Go figure. This time I decided to go with a
single piece of fabric for the backing. The top sheet was hard enough, so I saw
no need to add extra aggravation and time in the production of these
quilts.
I finished machine quilting the subway sign quilt and now only have the binding left to finish on that one.
I am so excited about how they look so far. I'm not saying that they should be entered into contests or anything. I would be lying if I said there was a single straight line of stitching except where it should be curved. Still I think they look good and will call them a success - once they're finished anyway. And at the rate I have worked on quilts in the past, these will likely be completed sometime around his 5th birthday.
