Bitter? Yeah, a bit.

I am not a big fan of Valentine's Day.
I think it stems from being the female Charlie Brown in grade school.
I think around third grade I gave up on Valentine's Day.
I remember the excitement of making the big envelope that attached to the back of my chair that all my classmates would put their cards in for me.
I remember picking out the little boxes of cards and carefully deciding who would get what and what candy-heart message to give them.
Except for the cards I received from my friends, I noticed a rather sad pattern - I was getting the a lot of the generic, "You're nice. Happy Valentine's Day" message I put on cards for those I didn't care for.
I guess it's better than not getting any.
So I never developed a fondness for the "holiday" and chose to become bitter toward it.
This is good news for Sean, who also doesn't like it, but understands that if I were into it, he would need to get me something.
Early in our relationship we decided that we wouldn't do anything to celebrate Valentine's Day. The only problem is, we had our official first date on Valentine's Day.
See, I picked a Wednesday as a good day to have dinner together. I didn't know that that particular Wednesday was Valentine's Day. When I realized what I had done, I was horrified. I called Sean to explain I wasn't expecting anything and that I wasn't one of those crazy girls who was plotting some romantic story to tell our grandchildren.
The only thing we typically do on Feb. 14 is go to The Cornish Pasty Co. in Tempe where we went on our first not-a-Valentine's-Day date.
I have to work this year, so pasties aren't possible. But to continue my tradition of shunning Valentine's Day, I chose to celebrate Statehood Day with a cake frosted to look like the Arizona state flag.
As I was preparing to frost the cake, Sean asked me if this was going to show up on CakeWrecks.
The thought had crossed my mind. Thank God, Bon Appetit is the only entity that considers me a professional.

Despite all that, this Valentine is too good not to share.
I love you, Sean.

Now that I now what it means - My love will never -30- for you, either. I think your cake came out awesome - I was very impressed! Oh, and just so you know - I never got V-day cards either - not even the generic ones. I hate this day. Therefore: Happy 99th birthday, Arizona!

PS - while V-days sucks - it is the best day ever, as it was the day I met you for our real first date, and my life became a billion times better.

Now get back to work, DiVincenzo!

Oh yeah, I forgot how in our instant-messaging conversations at work, I called Sean "Mr. Valentine's" for a few months before I could remember his name. :-)

@ Sean - You're so sweet. I love you!
@ Penny - I remember that! It's still a good code name for Sean. :)
