Cracking the journal code

My return from the brink of a cake wreck is not the only disaster from which I haven't backed away.
A few months ago, I tried making my own fabric-covered journal.
I followed the directions on a tutorial and consulted others to make sure I was doing everything right, and yet it still didn't turn out quite right.
The directions called for box-type cardboard and regular craft glue which made for a rather wobbly looking journal.

As another Christmas gift for Laura, who is a writer, I decided to print out and bind some of her poems and stories into my second attempt at journal making.
For this one, I bought chip board for the cover and used spray mount instead of glue for the fabric cover and cover pages, hoping it would produce a stronger cover with less warping.

It's still not perfect, but it turned out much nicer than my first attempt. The spray mount made for a much crisper fabric cover and cover pages, and my page stitching improved.

On the next one I think I will sew the ribbon to the fabric cover first and trim the fabric a bit in spots to make nice, tight corners as well as use a recipe for wheat paste I found on a book-binding site to attach the pages and fabric.
I'm close to cracking the code on journal making.
